The Revolution will be…Quantum!

That’s right, Quantum Technologies will be revolutionary! Think about the technological revolutions you have already witnessed, like the personal computer and mobile phones. Quantum technology has the potential to have a similar effect on society. 



Quantum particles have special properties, such as entanglement and superposition, that allow them to operate in a different way compared to current technologies. We can harness these unique attributes to make more accurate sensors, improve data security, or create exponentially-faster computers. 


Quantum physics is the study of how the world works at the scale of atoms and elementary particles. The way that single particles behave is unique, and very different to how you and I perceive the world. For example, a basketball exists in one location on the court according to classical physics (& our eyes!), and it will travel in a well-understood arch through the air. But the same cannot be said for the individual atoms that make up that basketball. If you try to find the exact location of an atom, then you will know nothing about how fast it is traveling or where it’s going… Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle predicts this “quantum fuzziness”, and experiments have confirmed it.

 

Scientists in this field have figured out ways to utilize these special quantum properties to create some amazing technologies, such as Quantum Sensors, Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNG), Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), Quantum Computers, and Quantum Memories/Repeaters to name a few. We are now at a point in research where many people are commercializing products and selling technologies that utilize quantum physics. But this tech is still under development and needs more time to mature before large-scale deployment.

To understand the power of Quantum Technologies, let's look at Quantum Computing. A classical computer records data as binary bits, which can be either zero or one. However, a quantum computer uses quantum bits (qubits), which can be stored as both a zero and a one at the same time. Harnessing the superposition principle of quantum physics allows for exponential speedups in solving some problems compared to classical computers. It is expected that quantum computers will be able to simulate systems with more variables than currently achievable. This should make them more powerful than the most high-powered supercomputers today and in the future.

Revolutionary? Yes, the potential for Quantum Technologies to be disruptive to their respective industries is high. A fully-functioning quantum computer will be an extremely powerful tool, and might even be able to hack the best current encryption methods (e.g. RSA and ECC). When a technology is disruptive, that means it changes the way an industry operates. Quantum has the potential to disrupt industries, from health care, manufacturing, transportation, computing, finance, and travel to communications and data security. It will be such a big leap forward due to the cosmic shift in understanding, and this could have ripple effects throughout the entire economy.
